March Newsletter

The month of March is now upon us and we are hoping for warmer days. This month will be highlighted with report cards on March 16th and parent-teacher interviews on March 22nd and 23rd . Be sure to send back your form with your top three choices for times. I will do my best to accommodate your first choice. There will be no school on Friday, March 19th in lieu of the two parent-teacher interview evenings.

We have a few things to be excited about this month! Children will have an opportunity to visit Scholastic Book Fair on Wednesday, March 23rd. A note indicating our special time to shop will be sent home a little later in the month. We also look forward to Taco in a Bag hot lunch day on Tuesday, March 29th. The cost for this will be $2 for the half order.

Early dismissal this month is on Thursday, March 10th at 12:10, Day 5. This is a Kindergarten day!

We will wrap up our topic of “Healthy Habits” this month and shift our discussions to the Four Food Groups and Healthy Eating. Children will be working toward filling a class poster with foods that are good for our bodies and foods that are “okay” to have once-in-a-while. If you have any grocery store flyers or food magazines with pictures you are no longer needing at home, we would love to have you send them our way for cutting up. Please send A.S.A.P. Thanks so much!

We will study the letters Gg, Cc, Ll, and Nn this month. We will also continue to review all other letters studied so far in preparation for report card evaluation. We have started a guided writing program in our classroom and children are excited about learning to print colour words, frequently used sight words, and words from our drawing program. They combine these to create short sentences in which they use a capital at the beginning and an end mark (.!or?) at the end. They then draw a picture to match their sentence. We look forward to adding more words to our repertoire!

We will begin “Reading Buddies” in our classroom this month. Children will be paired together and take turns “reading” a book to their friend. After each child has had a chance to read their book, the children will be given a chance to draw a picture of their favourite part of either book. The books children read are familiar books they have already heard or simple books using words we have studied in guided writing. Children are encouraged to read the words that they recognize and use the pictures in the book to tell the story. Children love this activity! Encourage your child to be a “reading buddy” to you at home too!

We will begin a new unit in math this month entitled, “Exploring Geometry and Measurement”. Our focus this month will be on the geometry portion. Children will work toward sorting 3-D objects according to a single attribute and describing 3-D objects using math vocabulary words like: round, flat, point, corner, big and small. Children will also have an opportunity to build and create 3-D objects with a variety of materials in an effort to discover which stack easily and which roll easily. A parent information sheet is attached to this newsletter along with some suggestions to reinforce these concepts at home.

In addition to this, please practise counting to 50 at home with your child. If your child can do this well, count higher! We like children to be able to count to 100 by the end of Kindergarten. If this is easy for your child, try having him/her count it backwards. This is a bit more challenging!

I look forward to seeing you later in the month! Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
